“Habits are the compound interest of self‑improvement. Getting 1 percent better every day counts for a lot in the long run.”
– James Clear
If you haven’t read Atomic Habits by James Clear yet, stop what you’re doing and grab a copy here. It is truly life-changing. Below are some simple home habits that have helped me bring calm and order to my daily routine.
I used to feel overwhelmed by clutter and chaos—even as a minimalist—but these small shifts have made a big difference. Now, my home feels cleaner and calmer with less effort. Plus, I no longer face a never-ending to-do list each day. Instead, I can focus on one big thing that really needs my attention because I’ve kept up with habits that help maintain a tidier space.
1. Reset the Night Before
Evening tidy-ups (5–10 mins) like washing dishes, wiping counters, starting laundry, prepping breakfast, or clearing toys make mornings smoother and less chaotic.
2. Meal Prep & Planning
Simple prep—cut fruit and veggies, and assemble burritos or bagels for breakfast. On no-prep days, I stick to easy breakfasts like yogurt bowls, oatmeal, eggs and fruit—and guess what? My toddler loves it all. I rotate the same meals each week and throw in a new recipe every now and then to mix things up.
3. Wake Up Earlier for You Time
Trust me, this one works. Waking up just a bit before everyone gives you precious alone time to journal, do yoga, or set intentions—setting the tone for a calmer, more focused day.
4. Use the Basket Method
When you’re cleaning, carry a basket with you and toss in anything that’s out of place to sort later. Another way to manage clutter is to keep small baskets in or near each room. Throughout the week, if you spot items that don’t belong, just drop them in the basket. Then, set aside time, like at the end of the week, to go through and put everything back where it belongs. Alternatively—or alongside using baskets—try tip number 5.
5. Don’t Put It Down—Put It Away
Drop bags, shoes, or clothes straight where they belong as soon as you walk in the door. It stops clutter before it starts.
6. Wear Clothes Multiple Times
Clothing often doesn’t need washing after just one wear, except undergarments. Hang them back up instead of putting them in the dirty clothes hamper. Saves time and money (;
7. Keep Cleaning Wipes Within Reach
Storing quick surface wipes in every room makes it easy to tackle little messes as you go. Those “while I’m here” clean-up moments add up and keep your space feeling fresh without extra effort. Then, you can schedule a time for a deeper clean.
8. If It Takes a Minute, Do It
Simple tasks often feel so much bigger if delayed. Something like booking an appointment or doing laundry? If it takes just a minute, do it now and save yourself the snooze it’ll cost mentally later.
9. Declutter Regularly
Fewer things = fewer decisions and less cleaning. Embrace a capsule wardrobe, reduce dish collections, and give away what you don’t use. You’ll thank yourself later. Be on the lookout for more posts on decluttering.
10. Have a Place for Everything
Create a designated spot for every item — even the small stuff like keys, backpacks, shoes, or toddler toys. When everyone knows where things belong, clutter doesn’t stand a chance.
Take Small Steps & Be Kind
You don’t need to implement all habits at once or even at all if it doesn’t align with you. Choose one or two that resonate and build from there. The smallest changes compound into big results.

[…] As a stay-at-home mom, student, and someone who is often overstimulated, I thought I had to keep hustling to be productive or enough. Lately, I’ve realized that slowing down takes effort too, especially when you’re wired not to, and that it’s okay to let yourself do less and simply be more present. It can become even more possible by making small daily habit changes. You can read more about that here. […]
